Background of the study

The advent of social media has precipitated profound changes in linguistic practices worldwide. In Nigeria, Instagram has emerged as a platform where innovative syntactic constructions are both created and propagated. This study examines how social media influences the evolution of Nigerian syntax, focusing specifically on Instagram captions. Nigerian English, interspersed with indigenous language features, provides a unique context in which traditional syntactic norms are challenged by creative, informal expressions. As users condense messages and employ novel grammatical structures to engage audiences, the boundaries of conventional syntax are continuously redrawn (Nwachukwu, 2023). The study explores how brevity, visual integration, and user interactivity contribute to syntactic innovation. It also considers how these changes reflect broader socio-cultural transformations, influencing communication patterns and identity formation. The investigation draws on contemporary research that underscores the transformative power of digital communication, highlighting both the adaptive and disruptive aspects of syntax in social media contexts (Ogun, 2024; Akinwale, 2025). Through a detailed analysis of Instagram captions, the study aims to document the emerging syntactic trends and assess their implications for language evolution in Nigeria.

Statement of the problem

Despite the growing influence of social media on language, there remains a significant gap in understanding how platforms like Instagram contribute to the evolution of Nigerian syntax. Traditional grammatical rules are often disrupted by informal, user-generated content, leading to a divergence between standard language and its digital form (Nwachukwu, 2023). This divergence poses challenges for educators, linguists, and communication professionals in understanding and preserving linguistic norms. Furthermore, the rapid pace of syntactic change on social media is not well documented, leaving a void in research on the long-term implications for language evolution (Ogun, 2024). This study seeks to address these challenges by providing a comprehensive analysis of syntactic trends in Instagram captions.

Objectives of the study:

1. To document syntactic trends in Nigerian Instagram captions.

2. To analyze the influence of social media on traditional syntax.

3. To propose recommendations for balancing language evolution with linguistic preservation.

Research questions:

1. What syntactic innovations are evident in Nigerian Instagram captions?

2. How does social media usage influence traditional syntactic structures?

3. What strategies can help preserve linguistic integrity amidst evolving digital syntax?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it explores the impact of digital media on the evolution of Nigerian syntax, shedding light on the interplay between traditional language norms and innovative online communication practices. The findings will offer valuable insights for linguists, educators, and policymakers by documenting the dynamic changes in language use and suggesting ways to balance innovation with preservation. The research contributes to the broader field of sociolinguistics and enhances our understanding of language evolution in the digital age (Akinwale, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study is confined to analyzing the evolution of Nigerian syntax as observed in Instagram captions. It does not consider other social media platforms or offline language practices.

Definitions of terms:

1. Syntax: The set of rules that govern the structure of sentences.

2. Instagram Captions: Textual descriptions accompanying images on the Instagram platform.

3. Language Evolution: The process by which language changes over time.
